Alex Delly, a Hyundai Master Technician at Ken Ganley Hyundai in Norwalk, Ohio was “Hyundai Team Tech” May 4 at Mid-Ohio. He witnessed some fine racing! In just their third race in the competitive International Motor Sports Association Michelin Pilot Challenge Series, Bryan Herta Autosport (BHA) scored their first victory Saturday at Mid-Ohio. Weather was a factor throughout the weekend and Mother Nature played her hand during the 2-hour race.
Alex lived a dream-come-true since he follows this series “religiously” on TV. When he was notified of his selection to the team, he immediately called his wife who was overwhelmed at the news. The Master Tech, with previous pit crew experience in the American Endurance Racing Series has always wanted to “pit” for his own brand.
The experience didn’t disappoint. Alex jumped right in and was given several duties from checking and tightening nuts and bolts, cleaning off the weather-driven dirt and mud to holding the sign board for the #21 car. He working in close proximity to Hyundai technician Scott Mattison and they traded Hyundai stories from both on and off the racing circuit. Scott passed along some of the race modifications performed on the cars. The Hyundai race cars did not disappoint. : “This series appeals to grass roots racers who will now consider the Hyundai brand as a viable race platform,” quipped Delly. “The cars performed well against other makes.”
Alex Delly’s Hyundai story began at age 17. His car had blown an engine and he decided to replace it with a Tiburon. During the purchase process, he needed to visit the dealer. While there, he inquired about a job and was called back to become a porter. Fast forward to now with years of training from Don Rotermund and Jeff Wienburg at the Central Region Training Center behind him, Alex represents all the Hyundai techs from that region.
“I was thinking days before I got the call, ‘What would it be like to participate?’ When the call came and my Service Manager, Jan Metzka summoned me, I was worried it was a customer wanting to discuss a call back or something. I was relieved to learn that I was chosen to finally be on the Hyundai Race Team,” said Delly. To get to that point, Alex’ strategy worked, “Every day you gotta learn something new.” On May 4, 2019 at the Mid-Ohio Raceway in the pits with the pros, Alex learned a lot!
